This job is open to

Students: Current students enrolled in accredited educational institutions from high school to graduate level. Includes internships, pathways and other student programs.

Clarification from the agency

Open to individuals who are at least 16 years old, who are students currently enrolled for the Fall 23′ academic term in a degree or certificate seeking program, taking at least a half-time course load. You also must have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must have at least one year remaining in their required coursework for completion of their degree or certificate. Non-citizens may apply but must complete a citizenship affidavit.

Duties

As a Student Trainee,you will perform the following duties:

  • Prepares a variety of written materials which may include letters, memoranda, reports, statistical material, etc.
  • Ensures emails, documents, and written materials are in proper format and that spelling, grammar, and punctuation are correct.
  • Receives, screens, maintains follow-up control on, and routes correspondence and other materials to appropriate staff members.
  • Performs data entry using various database management systems.
  • Provides assistance to program staff in preparation for meetings, conferences, and panels.
  • Maintains and organizes virtual files for efficiency and record keeping.
  • Assists office visitors and callers.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Selectee will be required to have a background investigation prior to onboarding.
  2. Selectee must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited academic institution & maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher for the duration of the Internship.
  3. Selectee will be required to sign an agreement that outlines the parameters of the Internship Program.
  4. Selectee may be required to submit updated transcripts and proof of enrollment upon selection and during the duration of the Internship.
  5. Selectee may be required to serve a 1 year trial period.
  6. Selectee may be required to complete a background investigation prior to onboarding.

Additional Requirements:

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

From the closing date of this vacancy announcement, applicants MUST have at least one year remaining in their required coursework for completion of their degree.

Federal Appropriations Law requires that Non-Citizens meet certain eligibility criteria to be considered. Students may be hired for Internship positions at any time during the year and may work full-time or part-time based on office needs.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by AFGE Local 3403.

NSF has determined that all of its positions are eligible for telework. Work suitable for telework depends on job duties; therefore, employees must receive approval from their supervisor for telework and have a telework agreement in place. Entering into a telework agreement is voluntary.

It is NSF policy that NSF personnel employed at or IPAs detailed to NSF are not permitted to participate in foreign government talent recruitment programs. Qualifications for the National Science Foundation Pathways Internship Program 2023

Applicants must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited academic institution and have a 2.5 GPA or higher to be eligible for a Pathways Internship Appointment.

In addition to the above appointment requirements, see below qualification requirements:

To qualify at the GS-3 level, you must have at least 6 months of general experience which is progressively responsible clerical or office work;

OR you have successfully completed 1 year of education above the high school level;

OR you possess a combination of post-high school education and general experience, as described above, that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.

To qualify at the GS-4 level, you must have at least one year of general experience which is progressively responsible clerical or office work;

OR you have successfully completed two years of education above the high school level;

OR you possess a combination of post-high school education and general experience, as described above, that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.

To qualify at the GS-05 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in federal service using word processing software to prepare correspondence; responding to routine non-technical inquiries; or other clerical or office support functions.

OR have successfully completed four full years of education above high school level;

OR have a combination of post high school education and experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

Examples of specialized experience include: developing and maintaining spreadsheets and other financial records; developing work tracking systems to ensure timely completion of work assignments; coordinating and making travel arrangements; and composing/typing reports in final.

Experience refers to paid & unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) & other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills & can provide valuable training & experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The Internship Program allows students an opportunity to be converted non-competitively to a career-conditional or term position once the student completes all requirements of the Internship Program. Noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position is NOT guaranteed. The Intern’s eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the agency will opt for conversion.
